Reliability and Lifetime: The Two Primary Causes of MLCC Failure
Field failures of MLCCs are primarily attributable to two categories: cracking induced by mechanical and thermal stresses, and degradation of dielectric properties. For automotive‑grade and long‑life applications, compliance with the AEC‑Q200 standard and accelerated life testing represent the minimum requirements; however, “certification” does not equate to “zero failures.”

RF and Microwave MLCCs: The Underestimated High-Frequency Barrier
Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for RF and microwave applications prioritize high Q factors, low ESR/ESL, and stable temperature coefficients—approaches that sharply contrast with the traditional “high capacitance first” paradigm. These characteristics represent critical performance bottlenecks in base stations, RF front ends, and microwave modules; improper component selection can lead to subtle yet significant performance degradation. Yuanqi Co., Ltd. simultaneously mass‑produces both standard, general‑purpose MLCCs and RF/microwave‑specific series, giving equal emphasis to RF and general‑purpose applications, thereby enabling it to offer comprehensive capacitor solutions to a single customer.
BME Base-Metal Electrodes: A Fundamental Revolution in Cost Reduction
BME (Base Metal Electrode) technology replaces palladium–silver (Pd/Ag) with nickel (Ni) as the internal electrode, which is critical for optimizing the cost structure of multilayer ceramic capacitors. However, this approach requires a compatible reduction‑resistant dielectric and sintering under a reducing atmosphere, making it an engineering challenge that spans the entire system rather than merely a material substitution.
Thin-layering and High Capacitance: “Stacking” Capacitors Together
The key to achieving high capacitance in MLCCs lies in “more and thinner dielectric layers.” Thinning and miniaturization together define the cutting edge of industry technology, with the primary challenges residing in thin‑layer printing processes and multilayer yield. Moreover, as layer thickness continues to decrease, reliability margins become increasingly constrained.
Dielectric Material Systems and Temperature Characteristics
The performance limits of MLCCs are dictated by their ceramic dielectrics; Class I (C0G/NP0) and Class II (X7R/X5R/Y5V) each have well-defined application scenarios. Selecting the appropriate component essentially involves balancing capacitance value, temperature stability, package size, and voltage rating. Meanwhile, decoding EIA codes is the first step in avoiding the common issue of “high nominal value but low measured performance.”
Price Cycles and Supply-Demand Dynamics: Understanding the Underlying Logic of Price Fluctuations
MLCC prices exhibit pronounced cyclicality, driven primarily by factors such as delayed capacity expansion, adjustments in utilization rates, and shifts in downstream demand. At present, supply and demand are broadly balanced, with structural tightness concentrated in automotive‑grade and high‑capacitance products, while standard‑grade MLCCs face downward pricing pressure.
